SciBuilder: Building the Instruments of Inquiry

A patent-pending science-observation platform that STEMsaic designed, built, and spun into its own venture.

The challenge

Authentic inquiry, locked behind the lab.

Most people meet science as spectators. The instruments that make real observation possible, spectrometers, sensors, the tooling that turns a question into data, live inside funded laboratories. Everyone else gets the finished story, rarely the chance to run the investigation themselves.

That is a gap in the science:society interface, and it is a hardware gap. You cannot close it with one more lesson plan or one more explainer. Someone has to build the instrument and put it in the hands of teachers, students, researchers, and at-home makers.

The approach

Build the instrument, not just the lesson.

STEMsaic designed and built SciBuilder: modular science-observation hardware paired with an AI inquiry layer, engineered so a bottle becomes a working lab. It was co-designed with the people who would use it, researchers, classroom teachers, students, and the DIY at-home community, so the tool fits real inquiry rather than a demo.

This is the design-and-build practice made literal. Not a slide deck about engagement, a patent-pending platform that someone can pick up and use to ask a real question and get a real answer.

Designing the interface is the idea. Building the instrument is the proof.

The outcome

A venture that stands on its own.

SciBuilder is now an independent, patent-pending venture with its own home at scibuilder.com, advancing toward NSF SBIR support. It carries the science:society interface into people's hands at the instrument level, where Portal to the Public connects scientists and publics through people, SciBuilder connects them through tools. The same interface, built two ways.

It is also the clearest evidence behind a simple claim: STEMsaic does not just design the science:society interface. We build the instruments that cross it.

The public end of the same interface: a national program that helps scientists build engagement rooted in their impact identity.
