Helping research find its pathways, with ARIS
Great research rarely fails for lack of ideas. It stalls because no one has mapped the route to the people, partners, and markets it could reach. That route is what ARIS, and this part of STEMsaic's work, is built to find.
Researchers are told to make an impact, then left to find the road alone.
A researcher with a real discovery is often asked, in the same breath, to translate it, partner it, and broaden its impact, with no map and no training for any of it. The pathways exist, through incubators, tech transfer, industry partners, public engagement, and grant-supported translation, but they are scattered and easy to miss from inside a lab.
What is missing is rarely ambition. It is a community that has already walked those roads and can point you to the one that fits your work.
A community that builds the pathways, and a guide who has walked them.
ARIS, the network advancing research impact in society, is that community. I have been part of it since before it carried the ARIS name. I am a 2021 ARIS Fellow, a certified Portal to the Public facilitator and national training-manual reviewer, and the ARIS EPIIC Partnership Advisor for NSF's Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP), advising the four-college EPIIC cohort. The real credit belongs to ARIS: a creative, collegial group of people who make impact happen and share what they learn.
Inside that community, STEMsaic's role is connective: helping researchers and their institutions find the translation, partnership, and broader-impact routes their work needs, and the grant support that funds the trip. Not pushing every project toward a startup, but matching each one to the pathway that fits.
Impact is rarely a solo act. It travels along a path other people have already built.
Research that reaches further than the lab.
Researchers leave with a route rather than an obligation: a clear next step toward translation, the right partner or program, and the language to make the case in a proposal. The pathway stops being a mystery and becomes a plan.
And it stays anchored in a community worth being part of. The work is better because ARIS is in it, and I am grateful to have been along since the start.
